Bill buys a new Mac, volume eight: a bunch more things I love about my new PowerBook

Tuesday, April 27th, 2004  by Bill Palmer

Yesterday I looked at a dozen things I loved about my new Titanium PowerBook, and here are a dozen more. I love my PowerBook because...

13. The compact keyboard allows me to resume my mastery of every little-known keyboard shortcut on earth. Changing among tabs in Safari: Shift-Apple-Right Arrow. Practice enough, and you can perform it with one hand, leaving the other hand free to operate the trackpad. Like with learning the piano, it's all in the fingering.

14. Because it's really, really, really, really fast. It's more than fast enough to suit all my needs. And what's amazing is that the new $799 eMac is even faster. So, for all you elitists out there, misinforming consumers by telling them that an eMac isn't fast enough for them? Bzzzt, wrong answer.

15. Speaking of speed, what's really nice is that my PowerBook only has 512 MB installed, a mere half of the Gigabyte that it's capable of holding...meaning that a year from now, when new versions of software come out and I want to goose my PowerBook's speed, all I have to do is add more RAM.

16. Because while the PCMCIA card slot is a ridiculous waste these days, at least it doesn't take up any room, or make the laptop larger or heavier.

17. Because it's the first Mac laptop I've ever used that has a glowing Apple logo on the lid.

18. And because unlike with the previous generations of PowerBooks, the glowing Apple logo on this machine is right-side-up.

19. Because even though my experiences with the Nanosaur II demo can be summed up with me crashing into two trees, the neck of another dinosaur, and getting seasick from all the three-dimensional flying, the game played really smoothly on this machine.

20. Because, thanks to a reader, I now know how to do this: "Be sure to learn Command-Shift-Asterisk, which turns on the zoom function. Then use Command-Shift-Plus and Command-Shift-Minus to ease the load on those overworked ol' eyeballs."

21. Because, thanks to the G4 processor, Keynote (one of my absolute favorite pieces of software) can actually run at full-speed.

22. Because starting up my PowerBook is ridiculously fast. Not that I would have much reason to shut it down in the first place.

23. Because now, I don't have to buy a DVD player.

24. Because as I pack for the "Apple Store + User Group" Road Trip, my PowerBook takes up so little space in my laptop bag that I can fit just about everything else I own into the bag as well. See you from the road!
