Feedback and distortion: Windows technicians preferring the Mac

Friday, May 28th, 2004  by Bill Palmer

It's been awhile since I've cracked open the mailbag, so let's see what's cooking...

Regarding the use of analogies to explain the function and importance of RAM memory:

"Your computer speed is like the number of hands you have, and your RAM is like your counterspace. It's a lot easier to just sit thing on your counter, than to have to keep taking them out of the cabinet, and put them back in. So, more RAM equals more ability to keep many things happening."

Well, I'm not sure I agree that my analogy is confusing, but I do think I like yours better than mine, and might end up stealing it for my own use. Thanks for submitting it.

Regarding the column "Macintosh: it's not just the same crap, but different":

"Wow. You've articulated basically everything I've come to perceive of the personal computing world over the years in one convenient article. People DO think that the Mac is the same crap but different and tend to believe all the FUD. I love taking my iBook around. "Yes, it's not huge like most PC laptops." Show people how to do things on it, "That's all?", and it WORKS. It amazes them. It helps that I'm a Windows tech, and I own a Mac. THAT gives me credibility with the masses, that even though I really do know my way around Windows, I'd STILL prefer Mac. So really the key to the whole thing is the opinion leaders. If even a small percentage of them can get over themselves, the normal users would change their minds in huge numbers."

Thanks, and keep up the good work. User bases are built one new user at a time. And it's always amazing to me just how many Windows technicians by day, go home and do their own computing on a Mac.

Regarding the billpalmer.net Online MUG:

"Howdy, I'd like to join your User Group. Having an online group is such an obvious thing I'm surprised apple hasn't done it already."

You have a point there. Oh well. Apple's loss, this site's gain.

Regarding the bizarre mall advertisement I was sitting next to last month, as I sat with my PowerBook outside the Apple Store in Boca Raton's Town Center Mall in order to gain internet access:

"Do you happen to remember from that scrolling advertisement what footwear company claims 'We put the 'S' in action'? It's just a little piece of trivia that I'm looking for."

The 'S' stands for Skechers shoes, but the ad still makes no sense to me whatsoever. I guess it's not supposed to. I probably wouldn't have given the ad much thought, if it had said something that made sense.

Regarding new features in iTunes 4.5:

"I believe I read somewhere (haven't tried it yet) that 4.5 will allow for simultaneous multi-user use of iTunes unlike the prior versions where you could only have iTunes running under one user account at a time."

After trying it out myself, I can confirm that you are correct. But it gets really strange: you can launch iTunes and begin playing a song while in one account, use Fast User Switching to log into another account without logging out of the first one, launch iTunes, and begin playing some other song...while the first song from the first account is still playing. Bug or feature? You decide.

Regarding my mock "rumor" parody last week, in which I claimed that Apple was creating a third, independent internal division focused entirely on cheese:

"Your cheese rumour really cheered up my previously cloudy New Zealand Saturday."

"hahaha love your article about apple's new 'cheese' division, brilliant!"

Thanks, and I can only hope that my cheese rumor doesn't end up being my one lasting contribution to society. ;)

Well, that's all from the mailbag this time around. Gotta run. I've just spent twelve hours moving furniture into the new place...and I've still got boxes to unpack. Good thing I've got my priorities straight, eh?
