The State of the Mac in Education

Welcome educators!

Thursday, July 17, 2003

by Bill Palmer

Obviously, we have some building to do around here. Notice that I said "we", not "I".

That's right, despite the fact that this site is named after one individual (hey, it's my site), the goal here in the "/educators" area of billpalmer.net is to provide a centralized location for Macintosh-using educators to give help, get help, trade ideas, save each other time, save the Macs in schools...and most importantly, enhance the education of our students.

As the Technology Specialist at a 100% Macintosh-based elementary school, I want nothing more than to be able to share my experiences, my successes, my mistakes, and everything else I can with other Mac-using educators. I have a feeling that I'm not the only one who wants to share such things. And I'm sure that I'm not the only one who could use assistance, or someone else's advice or perspective, from time to time. But more importantly, I want educators to be able to communicate with and help each other directly about Macs-in-Education issues. Since we're all in this together, we might as well not hold anything back when it comes to assisting each other.

Schools aren't like businesses. Rather than being in competition with each other, we all have the same goal, which is simply to educate kids in the best way possible. When we help each other out, we all win -- and so do the kids. So if you've got anything to contribute for any of the links above, just drop me a line at billpalmer@mac.com. If the educators who visit this site hold true to form, the content and here will grow almost exponetially before too long. I'll be providing updates about the site, as well as commentary on the overall "State of the Mac" within education, in this space.

In the mean time, take a look at the three featured Macs-in-Education sites listed at the top of the sidebar. If your school is doing something fantastic with its Macs, submit your school to be the next to be featured. And then take a look at the Database of Macintosh-using Businsesses, which just might help to dispel the ridiculous myth that schools shouldn't have Macs because "businesses only use PC's". And be sure to contribute whatever content, advice, or resources you've got. Every little bit helps, especially to the educator who needs it!
